Vital Records (Birth, Marriage, Death)

Statewide registration is uneven—here is how to prove life events in Virginia.

Virginia kept early marriage records in many counties and later expanded state vital registration. For many 18th–19th century families you will prove events with marriage bonds, parish registers, Bibles, newspapers, pensions, and probate—not only a modern certificate.

Where to look

  • County / independent-city marriage bonds and later licenses
  • Church books (Anglican/Episcopal, Baptist, Methodist, Presbyterian, Lutheran, Catholic, Quaker, and others)
  • Newspapers (marriages, obituaries)
  • Delayed birth certificates and state vital statistics (later periods)
  • Military pensions and draft registrations
