Census methodology for Virginia research
City* vs. county enumeration, FAN clubs, and decade-by-decade method.
Virginia census work requires an extra step: confirm whether the household was enumerated in an independent city* or a surrounding county. Match the year before ordering film.
- Fix year and jurisdiction (city* vs. county; parent for pre-formation).
- Collect every decade; abstract ages, birthplaces, and neighbors.
- Push FAN clubs into deeds, chancery, and estates at the correct clerk.
- For 1850–1860 enslaved research, pair slave schedules with estates (see African American research).
