Census Research in Virginia
Federal schedules, gaps, and how to use census evidence with Virginia jurisdictions.
Federal census schedules are the backbone of household reconstruction. Virginia has strong 19th–20th century coverage with the usual caveats: undercounts, mobility, city vs. county enumeration, and enslaved persons enumerated without names before 1870 (with separate slave schedules in 1850–1860).
Strategy
- Collect every census appearance; note neighbors (FAN club).
- Correlate ages, birthplaces, and occupations with deeds and estates.
- Watch independent-city boundaries—families “in Norfolk” may appear under city or adjacent county pages depending on year.
- For 1850–1860 enslaved research, use slave schedules + probate + plantation context (see African American research).
- Colonial tithables, militia rolls, and tax lists fill gaps before 1790/1800 federal schedules.
